1. Start of TOGAF 9.2 Course

Welcome to this course on the togaf Standard version nine two. This course is designed to help you to take and pass the togaf Nine Part One exam and goes through the requirements of the exam one by one. This course covers the latest changes to the toga standard that were introduced in 2018. We will cover the structure of the toga specification itself, the definitions that you need to know, the basic and and core concepts of togaf and most importantly, the adm, the architecture development method which is the heart of thetogaf approach to designing an architecture.

togaf is the industry leading standard for enterprise architecture and is used by hundreds of governments, companies and organizations around the world. My goal with this course is to teach the information in a way that is interesting and engaging. Instead of trying to read 500 page specification, you should be able to watch these videos, take the practice tests inside this course, and then you’ll remember the information required to pass the exam. Are you ready? Let’s get going.

2. What is Enterprise Architecture?

We’re going to talk about some key terms in this video. And one of the first things we should talk about is what is the togaf standard? Now, the togaf standard is an architecture framework for enterprise architecture. Now, there’s some buzzwords as well. What is an architecture framework? Well, an architecture framework is a set of methods, tools, and a common language for assisting the creation, adoption and maintenance of an enterprise architecture. An architecture framework often contains an iterative process for creating architecture and with the togaf standard, that is embodied in the architecture development method, or adm.

So when we’re talking about enterprise architecture, what are we actually talking about? Well, it’s complicated. There are a couple of definitions for enterprise architecture or for architecture. There is an international standards organization called iso, as well as iec and ieee, and they put together a joint standard called 42 Ten version 2011. So they update this standard from time to time. That standard says the fundamental concepts or properties of a system in its environment, embodied in its elements, relationships, and in the principles of its design and evolution. So this is a very generic definition of architecture having to do with properties and elements and relationships, et cetera.

togaf 9. 2 does contain that standard for architecture, but it also adds a sentence to it as well. So the togaf 9. 2 definition of architecture is the iso definition plus the structure of its components, their interrelationships, and the principles and guidelines governing their design and evolution over time. Now, if you put those two statements together side by side, you’ll see that they’re essentially saying around the same thing. So an architecture is both the components of a system and the relationship to each other.

So the boxes and lines of a system plus the principles, rules, and guidelines governing their design and evolution over time. So basically, the process that you put around dial’s architecture in order to grow the architecture and change the architecture photograph is also about developing a proper architecture capability in your organization. So it’s having architecture governance, a standard met model for storing and organizing your information principles for the design of those documents, and a standard process for evolving that architecture in the months and years ahead. Architecture is not a static thing. It’s actually how we do things.

3. The TOGAF Certification for People

There are two levels of certification that you can go for currently. There is what they call Level One and Level Two. Or sometimes they’ll call it part one and part two. They do switch between the terms throughout this course. I’m calling these exams part one and part two. The Part One exam. If you pass, it will get you the toga Foundation level. If you pass the Part Two exam, you’ll get the togaf certified level. Either of these exams, when you pass them, you’ll be able to use an Open Group togaf certification mark on your resume or your website to let people know that you have achieved that rank. Let’s talk about the individual test then. The Part One Test is a test of the basic and core knowledge of togaf and the adm.

It is a multiple choice exam consisting of 40 questions. You must achieve a passing score of 55% or 22 out of 40, and each question is worth a single point. And you don’t lose points for getting any question wrong. You cannot refer to any other study materials during this test. So really you need to have memorized the contents of this course and the contents of the specification before taking the test. Part two test is different. This is a practical test which is scenario based. It is where you read a lengthy business scenario and then answer a question based on what you’ve read. There are only eight scenario based questions and you must achieve a passing score of 60%.

This exam is Open Book, which means that you will have a pdf version of the specification that you can refer to while taking the exam. You cannot bring your materials. There will be a button on screen that you can then look at the specification. And another unique feature is it uses gradient scoring. So there is a correct answer that’s worth five points, but the second best answer is worth three points, et cetera. Third best answer is worth one point, and there’s one answer that’s worth no points. In order to take the Part Two exam, you must have passed the Part One exam and there is an option where you can study for both exams together. It’s called the combined test. But you still have to have passed Part One to go into Part Two.

If you fail the exam, you must wait a month before taking it again. The exam typically costs around $320 Us each, or it’s $495 if you take them both together at the same day in the same sitting. It’s called the Combined Test and it is available in five languages. So you have English, mandarin, Chinese, Portuguese, French and Spanish. And my understanding is that there’s English as a second language version, which will get you a little bit more time to take the English tests. If you call ahead, book that in advance, you can’t just say that on the day of the test, but if you book it. You can get some more time to read through the questions if English is not your main language.

4. The TOGAF 9.2 Standard

TOGAF 9. 2 standards itself. Learning the structure and layout of the toga Standard is going to be great for when you’re doing the Part Two exam and you’ve got an Open Book exam. And it’s also a requirement for these Part One exams as well that you at least understand the way the document is laid out. I recommend that you read the relevant chapter with each lesson. So as we go through various various concepts, you can flip over to the toga specification. And after watching my video on it, going through the specification should only take you a few minutes and you’ll totally understand what they’re talking about. The Open Group provides the standard for free on its website in html form.

And if you register for an account, you can download a pdf copy for free. Unfortunately, they don’t allow me to share the pdf inside this course, otherwise I’d totally do that. So the Standard is broken into six parts and we’re going to go through them one by one right now. So the part one, the first part of the TOGAF Standard is the Introduction section. In this part of the document, it goes over the high level core concepts of TOGAF, as well as the key definitions. And I absolutely recommend, as you are studying for this test, that you go through the Definition section because the Part One exam is a multiple choice questions and it typically has to do with what is the meaning of this and when would you use that.

The definitions are going to contain many of those answers to those questions, so definitely read through the Definitions section. The Part two of the standard is the adm. That’s the heart of toga the core. This is the process, the iterative process by which architects develop architecture. Part three of the standard is what’s called Guidelines and Techniques. These are supplemental materials that will help you to apply the standard for your business. TOGAF recommends that you tailor TOGAF that you modify it for your specific needs. And so this is the section where you’ll find guidelines for how to modify it. Part four is the Architecture Content Framework.

These are the structured metamodel for building artifacts and building blocks and your architecture deliverables. This is where you understand what goes into each document. Part five is called the Enterprise continuum. This is a categorization model for categorizing. And when you put your architecture outputs into your architecture repository, you can categorize them from general to specific, whether they’re architecture or whether they’re solutions, you put them along the continuum. Finally, the last section. Part six is what’s called architecture capability. Framework.

In order to define an enterprise architecture, you must establish a capability for architecture. And this section discusses how you do that in addition to the Core standards. So the six parts that we just discussed, TOGAF 9. 2, includes something called the TOGAF Library, which is materials that were pulled out of the 9. 1 Standard or New materials that have been developed developed as a set of reference materials that supports your use of the framework. And so as you go through the toga standard, sometimes it does refer to documents that are in the library but are not in the standard. And we’ll try to call those out.
